Bryna Hull showing Doctor Dually Pep tied for 1st in the NRHA $500 The Gatolotto Memorial Non Pro at the CRHA Show in Burbank, California marking a 73, and ended up second in a run-off because of lead penalties. This was the 15th time Bryna has shown and the first time she has shown in a run off, and she was a little nervous. "It was totally my fault. He was great but I made a few mistakes. The lady that beat me came up and said she was sure glad I made those mistakes because the rest of the run was awesome. That was nice of her."
From the NRCHA Newsletter:
Kimberly Hernandez and Blondandboonsmal claimed the Youth Limited Championship at the NRCHA Derby at the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek, Arizona. The win was accompanied by a check for $288.

The college freshman has owned Blondandboonsmal, by Yellow Roan Of Texas out of Hollys Royal Blue, for a year. She was trained by Smoky Pritchett for the Snaffle Bit Futurity, and Hernandez purchased her from Oasis Ranch. "She's so cowy. IMPORTANT! EHV-1 OUTBREAK information
Please take the time to read information from RELIABLE sources.

This is a very serious and possibly fatal disease. Read about it, follow the recommended procedures and do not take it lightly.
Some disinfectants may not be effective against EHV-1. Our disinfectant of choice is Tek-Trol. Tek-Trol is effective against equine herpesvirus. It is listed on the label along with several other equine diseases, including CEM, EVA, rhodococcus, and strep equi (strangles). We are not affiliated with the product - we just use it a lot. We put it in a rose bush sprayer and thoroughly spray at the recommneded dilution. The link listed for Tek Trol has the manufacturer's label listed. There are others sources to buy it if you do a search.
EHV-1 FACTS
1. There is no vaccine for EHV-1
Neurological Disease. The current EHV-1 vaccines, especially the modified live virus vaccine, are thought to minimize the symptoms.
2. Zylexis is an immune stimulant and may be beneficial but it does not prevent the disease.
3.
Valtrex is an anti-viral - it does not "cure" the horse with EHV-1 but it can help.
4.
Horses can have no symptoms and spread the disease. A PCR test from a nasal swab and a blood test are needed to confirm if the horse has EHV-1.
5.
The morbidity (percentage of horses that get the disease) is high but the mortality (percentage of horses that die from the disease) is relatively low - currently at 14%. However, as more information is received those numbers can change. The mortality rates may include horses that were euthanized because treatment was not feasible.
6. Quarantine is the only method of preventing the spread of the disease.
7. There is no way to tell how many horses have been exposed, unless they are tested via nasal swab and blood test, because not all carriers of the virus have symptoms. This is why horses that showed in Ogden or Bakersfield, or horses that may have been in contact with horses from Ogden or Bakersfield, are being voluntarily quarantined. In California, all confirmed cases are mandatorily quarantined.
8. It is not a brand new disease but has been around for several years.
9. It is NOT spread by flies and mosquitos.
10. It is NOT spread in the air unless a horse is coughing/sneezing (aerosol transmission) and another horse is nearby.
11. There are other diseases that can cause fevers of 102 F and other diseases that can cause neurological symptoms.
12. EHV-1 is a reportable disease in the State of California. UC Davis and CDFA are providing information to all California equine veterinarians.
Consult your veterinarian for more information regarding EHV-1, bio-security and how to use disinfectants.

Every year we say we have the best foal crop ever. We should be getting better every year as we change a few mares around and add some new mares or new stallions. Sometimes we get it perfect and just repeat it year after year. And sometimes we switch mares back and forth from one stallion to another because we like the foals so much that we just cannot decide. Knowing so many of these mares and stallions for three or more generations makes things pretty predicable, not only on conformation and color, but on athletic ability and trainability. We only kept the mares we like the best and then kept their best daughters. A few got away when we needed to pay the feed bill or they went to an especially good buyer. We are fortunate to be able to breed some of those mares, too. Take a look at out latest foal crop and see that you think. We will keep adding photos. We think you will like them as well as we do. And we think you will have trouble picking a favorite - just like we do. Click here to go to the new foals page.

The herd work clinic was held last weekend and we had great weather on Saturday and two days of fun. The group met at 8:00 am Saturday and Pete used a white board to demonstrate horse and cattle position and to discuss terms used in herd work. After a question and answer session everyone mounted up and worked one cow at a time. They broke for lunch and had homemade hamburger soup (click here for the recipe). The weather was so nice that everyone sat out in front of the barn in the sunshine to eat lunch.
After lunch everyone who was ready had a chance to work out of a herd. Saturday night the group met at Gary's Country Deli in Galt to watch a cutting video and have a nice dinner.
Sunday morning started out with flag work. Pete had Scott demonstrate working a young horse on the flag. The emphasis was staying in position and slow, slow, slow.
After another lunch of hamburger soup (it is always better the next day), they started in with herd work again with everyone taking a turn at herd holding in the corners and turning back on both sides. Everyone had a great time and said they were happy to have someone explain things to them. The next clinic will be held in the spring but if you are interested in lessons with Pete before then, give us a call.

The new year is here already and things are busy.
The weather is getting better - at least we have not had rain all week. Our first mare is due to foal in three weeks and then they keep on coming.

If you are coming to our Herd Work Clinic, we will be sending you the
schedule and a liability release. Any spectators are free of charge for the January clinic but you need to bring your own chairs, drinks and lunch. Coffee will be provided.
The horse slaughter issue is being reconsidered. We read this in the Wall Street Journal this week: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748703808704576062064022541024.html#articleTabs%3Darticle

From our blog....
Anyone watching the sales at the NRHA and NCHA futurities knows that the prices are still down except for few horses in each session. Maybe we should re-phrase that - the prices seemed high on a few more until you add up the costs to get the horse there. There were embryo transfer foals by sires with stud fees of $7500 or more that brought less than $10,000. Obviously not a very good investment if the goal was profit.
There are still a lot of people who enjoy their horses and want to raise a good one out of their good mare. And there are a lot of people who want to ride better. It is a good time to breed your mare as stud fees are dropping and trainers have fewer horses in training, which means they have more time to help you. Give us call if you would like some help buying a horse, choosing a stallion, selling your horse, or choosing a trainer. We can help you make plans so you can enjoy your horses even more.
It is a good time to increase your knowledge and horsemanship skills. Pete will be doing a Non-Pro/Amateur/Novice Rider Cutting and Herd Work Clinic in January. Because Pete's cutting horses are so solid, getting plus scores for smooth cuts, herd work and loose reins, people have been asking him to do a series of clinics. Before we got so busy breeding mares, Pete did clinics for both basic horsemanship and cattle on the east coast and in Europe. He does an excellent job explaining things that you maybe had a hard time understanding before. And if you have ever met him you know he is a walking, talking encyclopedia of horse pedigrees. Give us a call or send us an email for more information. There will be a limited number of slots.
If you have not already signed up for our mailing list and newsletter you are missing out on our specials. Go to our contact page at and join the mailing list. The next special will be coming out soon.

The Production Sale Catalog link is posted here, on the Horses For Sale Page and also on the home page. If you want the whole catalog, it is available. The yearlings are looking good, the weanlings are weaned and halter broken, and the show horses are getting a few days off as we head to Reno for the last four days of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. We will have flyers at the booth and a dvd with all the sale horses on it. Stop by and talk to us if you are there. We will be back at the ranch on Monday morning. If you want to stop be while we are gone, the staff will be here to show you horses and answer questions.
A lot of people have called to ask if we will sell horses prior to the sale. Once the horses are cataloged, we will not sell them. We have people calling and arriving form all over the world and we do not think it is fair to sell the horses ahead of time once they are cataloged.
September 15, 2010
The production sale is just over three weeks away and the horses are looking good. The catalogs are at the printers and we will mail them out as soon as we get them. In the meantime, we will be sending out a flyer with photos and pegirees. We are heading up to Reno and will have flyers at the booth. Stop by and take a look at the dvd even if we are not there. We will be gong back and forth to the ranch.
ARC Matt Olena is for sale. He is a full brother to multiple million dollar sire, Smart Chic Olena, and has earned over $30,000 in cutting and reining, including scoring 229 at the NRHA Derby. He has sired winners in reining, cutting and reined cow horse including the high selling two year old at the NRHA Futurity Sale in 2008, Miss Frosty Olena, shown below as a three year old.

We have decided to offer some of our show horses in a Special Reserve section of our October 9th Production Sale. We have included Blondandboonsmal, who is qualified for the 2010 AQHA World Show in Junior Cutting and will sell with a paid entry. And Last Thing Smokin, who is ready to show in reining and reined cow horse. We have some other ready to show horses, too. Some of these horses have never been for sale before now.
